Big Blue and Your Lazy CPU - Your Screensaver Can Save the World

About a year ago, I encountered a noble grid computing project, run and funded by IBM, called the World Community Grid. World Community Grid is an effort to create the world's largest public computing grid to tackle scientific research projects that benefit humanity, and it’s making the technology available only to public and not-for-profit organizations. It’s running medical projects like Cancer research, searching for new anti-HIV (AIDS) drugs, investigating human proteome folding, genome comparison, and more... in other words - saving the world. The required computations are extremely complicated and time-consuming, so the idea is to simulate a super computer by distributing the computation tasks between many regular computers. This concept is called grid computing. Currently, about half a million computers are running these agents, so work of years before actual lab testing can be reduced to weeks. If you choose to come aboard, your computer will get a computation task from the server, compute it for several hours, send the result back to the server, and get back a new task - all of this will be done automatically by your screensaver.

I urge you to visit the World Community Grid website, check it out, and if it suits you, become a member, install the agent on your computer, and run it as your screensaver. It only takes about 5 minutes. Don’t use your screensaver to display past pictures of your kids, use your screensaver to actually help them in the future.

p.s. If you work in a pet shop, please don’t sell cats to quantum physicists.

Excellent recommendation! I used to belong to the seti project but wanted to do something a bit more worthwhile.

@EJB,
Yes, this does look more beneficial than SETI...

Hoi there! Stumbled upon your blog via blog catalog . Scrolling along, I saw something very familiar which I also support, in fact, it is in my site too. I have this also . It was recommended by a Dutchie friend who works for IBM. I am sure glad ppl from all over the world can share their computer's idle time for worthy causes. I have WCG, a sure help for better research projects and cure.

Well, I am off to read some of your posts now. Have a nice day!
